Volunteering, education and training

Since we moved in, Hope [my daughter] has really blossomed. We live closer to her school now, which means we can walk there instead of having to catch four buses. Now that she has a proper place to do her homework, her reading and school work have really improved.
One day, I’d like my own place. I’m working with Hope Into Action to get ready for that. I’m at college studying for my NVQ3 in Community Volunteering and I now feel like I have a future worth working towards. I volunteer regularly with two toddler groups, which I really enjoy. My self-esteem has really grown and I’m much more confident – I’ve even started my own business, selling second hand school clothing.
My life is totally unrecognisable from what it was last year. I don’t even want to think about where I might have ended up if it hadn’t been for Hope Into Action. I’ll always be grateful for the new start they’ve given me.

Managing physical and mental health

Poor physical and mental health are causes and consequences of homelessness. 158 of our 234 adult tenants reported suffering with their health at referrral (to 31 March 2020), 93 people improved and including those who maintained their health, we give thanks that 90% of those previously struggling were managing their mental and physical well-being. Our Empowerment Workers are acutely aware of people's challenges. Read here how one Empowerment Worker has seen real change for the better.
Finance management

Rent arrears and debt contribute to homelessness. Nearly half (47%) of our 234 tenants have no debt or are actively addressing the debt they have, either with us or a 3rd party. A third would describe themselves as financially stable. Here's how one of our tenants moved on using their new financial skills to assess the viability of a new home.
Found Employment

Homelessness exaggerates barriers to working - mental and physical ill-health, for a start. We are celebrating that 33 of our 234 adult tenants were employed for more than 16 hours a week for more than 3 months in the year to 31 March 2020. Of course, not all our tenants are in a position to work and physical and mental health struggles remain a barrier for some. Improved Relationships

In 2019/2020, 220 (94%) of all our 234 adult tenants felt they had maintained or improved social relationships. 44% said they enjoyed better family relationships. Reconnecting with family is not always appropriate but when it is, we celebrate. Bev describes how she was able to reconnect with her family with the support of her church and Hope into Action.
Reduced Drug and Alcohol Intake

85 of our 234 tenants, around 1 in 3 reported a relationship with drugs and or alcohol last year (to 31 March 2020). 41 reduced their reliance and a further 29 did not get any worse. Sadly 8 of our tenants lost their tenancy due to alcohol or drug misuse. One of our former tenants, Phillipe, describes his journey with Hope into Action and his hopes for the future.
Abstaining from Crime

In 2018/2019, 28 of our tenants had previously been in custody, only 5 re-offended. This year to 31 March 2020, we housed nearly double that number from prison, 53. Of those 47 remained crime-free. With a re-offending rate of 11% compared to the national average of 48%, we are celebrating the hope that a home and the right support can give. Maintaining Tenancies

This year to 31 March 2020, our churches housed 300 tenants, including 66 children with at least one parent. 92% maintained their tenancy, up on the 88% of the 250 tenants last year.
